Psalm 127:3-5.
3"Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. 5 Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; they shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate."
God's covenant with Adam and Eve contained two interdependent provisions: descendants and dominion. Two people alone could not take dominion of the Earth. It would require descendants.
For believers, having children is a response to the command, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it" (Genesis 1:28). In this psalm, children are called "a heritage from the Lord." This means that children belong to God; they are "ours" only in a secondary sense. God gives children to parents, as a man entrusts his fortune to his heirs. Jesus wants us not to despise "one of these little ones," and He holds up their faith in God as an example for adults (Matthew 18:1-5,10 - At the time the disciples came to Jesus saying, "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of  heaven?" Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said,
"Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in my name receives Me. Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven").
When a couple enters into marriage, they make themselves available to love, serve, and sacrifice for the next generation. To love and care for children is one of the principal ways that we honour God and share in building His kingdom.
